Lead X-ray Shielding Glass, also referred to as radiation shielding glass or lead glass, is a leaded glass that provides shielding protection by absorbing the energy of radiation. The shielding effect is created by a high concentration of lead and barium and the glass can be optically clear or have a slight yellow tint.
The lead equivalent in mm or PB is the protective effect of the glass. A lead glass rated 2.2mmpb has the lead equivalent of 2.2mm lead thickness. Lead glass is a requirement to get a clear view and when radiation shielding is a priority.
Lead glass is manufactured by casting the molten lead glass into a mould and once the glass has cooled and hardened, it is then ground on both surfaces and then polished to obtain the same finish as polished plate glass. The surfaces are extremely soft and should be handled with the utmost of care.
